ARIZONA FASHION WEEK

The Challenge.

Fashion weeks are typically promoted as a single event — a show date, a countdown, a highlight reel after the fact. That approach treats months of real work — casting, development, fittings, brand activations — as invisible lead-up instead of content. For the 2023 season, Arizona Fashion Week needed a media strategy that turned that entire process into the story itself, giving audiences a reason to follow along for months, not just show up on show night.

Jeff Otto Creative’s 2022 and 2023 Season Role

Jeff Otto Creative served as Media Lead and Photographer for Arizona Fashion Week's 2022 season.

For 2023, the role expanded to encompass the full media and social operation — Media Lead, Photographer, Social Media Strategist, and Content Creator — running from May through December 2023.

  • Organized and led a media team covering castings, workshops, brand activations, and networking events

  • Directed the season-long social media strategy and content calendar

  • Shot and produced original photography and video across every stage of the season

  • Built content systems designed to keep the brand's story fresh across a 7-month runway to show day

The Strategy

The media strategy was built around a simple idea: document the journey, not just the destination. Instead of promoting Arizona Fashion Week as a single show-night event, the season's content followed everyone involved from day one — models, designers, partners, sponsors, the production team, stylists, and hair and makeup artists — through casting, development, and every event leading up to the main shows.

That strategy was built around three brand pillars:

Night Life: capturing the energy go brand activations, parties, and events that gave the season its social pulse

Creative Community: spotlighting the designers, stylists, and artists who make up the fashion week ecosystem

Brand Activations: documenting partner and sponsor moments as part of the season’s ongoing story, not stand alone ads

The underlying bet was the same principle behind every Jeff Otto Creative campaign: give people a real platform to tell their own story, and they'll naturally promote the brand through direct association — without it feeling like promotion at all.

The Content System

To keep a 7-month season from feeling repetitive, the strategy diversified content type and format deliberately, rotating through distinct series rather than relying on one recurring post type:

  • Headshot & Model Announcement Series — individual casted-model headshots paired with short interview videos, introducing each model as a person with a story, not just a name on a lineup

  • Behind-the-Scenes & Candid Coverage — model development workshops, fittings, and events shot in an unposed, documentary style

  • Promo & Recap Videos — forward-looking hype content and after-the-fact recaps bookending each event

  • Event & Activation Coverage — brand activations, sponsor parties, and networking events covered as part of the ongoing season narrative

The goal was to get viewers emotionally invested in individual models early in the casting process, follow their development through designer fittings and parties, and stay engaged all the way to the main shows — turning a single event into a season-long story with a real cast of characters.

Why It Worked

The season-long data shows a strategy that compounded rather than spiked once and faded. Casting and model-announcement content built the initial audience through early summer; that audience then carried directly into show week, where reach and impressions multiplied several times over as the reels-first content system scaled to meet the moment.

Reels accounted for the large majority of total reach across the full season, and the single highest-reaching piece of content — a show-week reel — outperformed even the strongest casting-season content, proving the strategy could deliver at both ends of the funnel: building anticipation early, then converting that anticipation into a genuine spike at the moment that mattered most.

Giving models, designers, and partners their own moment in the spotlight didn't dilute the Arizona Fashion Week brand — it amplified it, building an audience early that was primed and ready to engage when show week finally arrived.

This is the same operating principle behind every Jeff Otto Creative engagement: audiences don't follow events, they follow people and stories. Structuring an entire season's media strategy around that idea — rather than a single show-night push — is what turned a 7-month lead-up into sustained, compounding audience growth that peaked exactly when it needed to.
