Case Study | June 2025 - August 2025PHOENIX SWIM WEEK
The Challenge.
Phoenix Swim Week needed to build a real, engaged audience in a single summer season and establish itself as the official swim week of Phoenix, Arizona — not just post event photos, but earn a defined position in a crowded field. Arizona already has multiple established fashion week organizations, and PHXSW needed an identity distinct from all of them, plus a swim-specific identity distinct from major national players and smaller local swim shows. The account needed a reason for people to care before the runway ever lit up: a narrative, not just a countdown.

The StrategyJeff Otto Creative built the season around a single unifying campaign concept: “All Roads Lead to Phoenix Swim Week.” Every piece of content — designer features, model spotlights, producer and sponsor stories — connected back to that central idea, positioning the show as the convergence point for Arizona's fashion and swim community.
The core strategic bet: audiences don't invest in an event, they invest in people. So instead of promoting Phoenix Swim Week as a single brand voice, JOC built content that told the individual stories of everyone behind it — designers, models, producers, and sponsors — turning the account into a rolling cast of characters the audience got to know before show day.
As Creative and Media Director for the season, Jeff Otto led the full visual and narrative identity for Phoenix Swim Week — not just the content calendar. That meant defining what PHXSW looked like, sounded like, and stood for, distinct from every other fashion and swim organization operating in the same market.

The Creative Direction Challenge
Phoenix has no ocean. No coastline, no beach culture, no built-in swim heritage to draw on — the exact opposite starting point of every major swim week in the country. Miami has the beach. Even Los Angeles and New York carry decades of coastal fashion association. Phoenix had to build a swim identity from a landlocked desert city, which meant the identity couldn't borrow from beach culture at all. It had to come from somewhere else entirely.
At the same time, Phoenix is one of the fastest-growing, youngest, and largest cities in the country — with a real, deeply rooted swim culture of its own. Triple-digit summers make pools and resort culture a way of life, not a seasonal accessory. Phoenix simply lacked a fashion identity that reflected that, on par with the coastal fashion capitals.
The creative direction:
Stop trying to borrow someone else's ocean, and build the identity around what Phoenix actually has — pool culture. Luxury resort pools and pool parties, brought down to street level within the city itself, positioned Phoenix Swim Week as a genuine expression of local culture rather than an imitation of a coastal show.
That insight extended directly into the season's campaign line. “All Roads Lead to Phoenix Swim Week” wasn't only about universal appeal — it reframed Phoenix's desert heat as the show's defining advantage. Every other swim week competes on coastline. Phoenix Swim Week competes on being the hottest — literally. Phoenix is the hottest city in the country in the summer, which made “the hottest swim week” both a literal and a figurative claim no coastal city could make.
Building An Identity In a Crowded Field
That local, pool-first identity also had to hold up against the competitive field. Arizona alone has multiple established fashion week organizations, each with its own defined lane, and PHXSW needed a position none of them occupied — plus a swim-specific identity distinct from major national players and smaller local shows.
The white space was clear:
Arizona's existing fashion weeks compete on business infrastructure, luxury spectacle, or cultural-movement framing — none built around a swim-specific identity. National swim weeks compete on scale and trade access. Local swim shows compete on casual, party-first appeal. Phoenix Swim Week's opening was to become the official, definitive swim week of Arizona — professional and aspirational like the national platforms, but built on the intimacy and community-first storytelling none of them offer.

Why It Worked
The growth wasn't the result of a single viral moment — it was the compounding effect of a season-long narrative structure. By making every designer, model, producer, and sponsor a character in the “All Roads Lead to Phoenix Swim Week” story, the account gave its audience dozens of individual reasons to follow, share, and show up — not just one event to remember.
This is the operating principle behind every Jeff Otto Creative campaign: audiences don't connect with brands, they connect with the people and stories behind them. Strategy determines the story. Story determines the content. Content drives the result.
It is also why the identity work mattered as much as the growth numbers. A crowded competitive field rewards the organization with the clearest position — and by the end of the season, Phoenix Swim Week had a narrative, a visual identity, and an audience relationship that none of the other Arizona fashion or swim organizations had built.
